Kirat Dewas Rai Utthan Samaj Nepal

About Us

Preserving identity. Promoting unity. Empowering community.

Mission

Our mission is to preserve the endangered Dewas Rai language, promote our unique cultural heritage, foster unity among Dewas Rai communities across Nepal, and contribute to the social, educational, and economic development of our people.

Vision

A vibrant and empowered Dewas Rai community where our language thrives, our traditions are celebrated, and our people prosper in modern Nepal while honoring ancestral roots.

Our Origins

The Dewas Rai people trace their lineage to the ancient Kirat civilization, whose roots run deep in Nepal's eastern hills. According to oral history and historical chronicles, the Kirat people established the Mahishapala dynasty, with King Yalambar (circa 6th century BCE) as the first recorded Kirati king — a figure mentioned in the Mahabharata. Following the Licchavi conquest of the Kathmandu Valley around the 4th century CE, the Kirat peoples migrated eastward into the hills and mountains. The Dewas Rai branch settled across the eastern districts, particularly in Dhankuta, Terhathum, Bhojpur, and Khotang. The Dewas Rai language, an Indo-Aryan language distinct from the Kiranti (Tibeto-Burman) Rai languages, is now listed as endangered. It represents a unique linguistic heritage within the broader Rai community.
